Alexandra Total Shutdown movement's Sandile Mavundla says illegal structures shouldn't be rebuilt and they will protest soon.

Residents of Alexandra township are planning another shutdown.

The community decided for another shutdown at a community meeting on Thursday night.

Following chaos erupting last week in Marlboro Gardens, Alexandra when illegal structures were demolished and left many people homeless.

To discuss whether a shutdown is looming, Bongani Bingwa chats to Alexandra Total Shutdown movement's Sandile Mavundla.

We had a public meeting on Thursday to discuss a way forward regarding the issue of development that has taken place and the stance of the City of Johannesburg regarding the issue of those illegal structures that were demolished.

Sandile Mavundla, Alexandra Total Shutdown movement

He says those illegal structures cannot be rebuilt as they are unlawful.

Those people tempered with a court order that prevents them from building there. They were illegal from the beginning, and when you look at the city managers statement, at the Human Rights Commission, she admitted that those structures were unlawful and most not occupied.

Sandile Mavundla, Alexandra Total Shutdown movement

He says during the initial total shutdown, those structures demolished recently didn't even have a roof.

Those people were pretending, just like the lady that said her baby was stuck under the rubble. Those people were acting. We are saying the city of Johannesburg must continue demolishing illegal structures.

Sandile Mavundla, Alexandra Total Shutdown movement

He says the shutdown is not politically influenced.

The mayor is ducking and diving and doesn't want to implement what is on the book. And you can't build on a riverbed. The mass action will happen soon and we are not doing anyone favours, the mayor is just showing the people of Alexandra the middle finger.
