Caller, Grant, gives his take on a discussion around the violent behaviour embedded in South African society.

How do we break the culture of violence in South Africa? From road rage to school violence.

It does not require an expert to understand the many factors that explain why we are a violent society given the history of apartheid, deep inequalities, grotesque acts of violence in criminality, toxic masculinity and more, says Eusebius McKaiser.

Why is it that you and I do not seem to have a handle on our violence as South Africans? Violence seems to be another language we are all fluent in.

Eusebius McKaiser, 702 radio host

We use violence to solve problems and then it becomes a culture of violence. You were smacked when you grew up and now you believe that a good smacking is the best way to try and get someone to learn a lesson...

Eusebius McKaiser, 702 radio host

In an open line, Eusebius places a particular focus on what we should be doing about violence and how to unlearn it.

Caller, Grant explains that South Africa is a very frustrated and stressed nation. He insists that South Africans do not have the life skills to engage.

I think a lot of people are only existing to exist. You born into a skwatta camp and you are victim of your circumstance rather than your choice...then you get into a situation where we are not taught confrontation - how to argue a point without something that says I am going to beat you because I can't articulate the point I want to make in terms of a disagreement,

Grant, caller

We don't have the life skills to engage.

Pinky says values start from the home and in communities.

Young kids observe what adults are doing. If you threaten Karima with rape, they think it is alright because it is an authoritative figure who is doing a certain thing.

Pinky ,caller

Our society since 1994 is becoming worse. Where in a society can police allow gangsterism to exist? Even politicians do not have respect for each other.
