Roaming lions located in Phalaborwa: Ledet's responsibility, says SANParks

Media specialist Ike Phaahla says the pride did not necessarily come from the Kruger National Park, as claimed by the department.

The 14 lions that have been roaming Phalaborwa have been sighted in the area of the Foskor Mine.

The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet) had claimed the animals escaped from the Kruger National Park.

But SANParks media specialist Ike Phaahla says that is not necessarily the case.

He tells Nicolaus Nickolaus Bauer on the Xolani Gwala show, that the lions have established their area on private land between Selati and Foskor for the past few months.

Phaahla says Ledet was alerted and agreed to lead the process to relocate them.

We are not too sure if those animals came out of the Kruger National Park but they had established their area there.

Ike Phaahla, Media specialist - SANParks

When animals come out of the Kruger National Park it is the responsibility of the provincial authority to take care of those animals to make sure they get translocated somewhere or brought back into the park.

Ike Phaahla, Media specialist - SANParks

Phaahla says in a meeting with Ledet, SANParks suggested that an alternative location be identified for the lions, because taking the pride back into the Kruger National Park might exacerbate the problem.

He maintains it's unfair to point fingers at the Park every time wild animals are on the loose, because they could come from any of the many private reserves in the area.

If needs be, SANParks will offer support to ensure the lions are moved, says Phaahla.
