SA Rugby announces contracting model overhaul
The South African rugby industry has announced a major overhaul of its contracting model.
This means SA Rugby will no longer directly contract Springbok players.
Provincial unions will also cap player budgets.
A statement says the new model will lead to improved use of resources, greater national and provincial alignment and improved succession planning at Springbok level.
John Maytham speaks to Independent Media's digital sports editor, Ashfak Mohamed about the implications of the decision.
Ashfak says although the new model brings clarity, he has some reservations about it.
I am not so sure that this is the right move for the Springbok teams.Ashfak Mohamed, Digital sports editor - Independent Media
It seems this is in favour of the players and the provinces.Ashfak Mohamed, Digital sports editor - Independent Media
What I am worried about is that the Springbok team has to be the main priority in South African rugby. It does well naturally... For years they haven't been put first and this was an opportunity to do actually do that.Ashfak Mohamed, Digital sports editor - Independent Media
