Banyana Banyana's first Women's World Cup campaign kicks off against Spain

Banyana Banyana make their Fifa Women's World Cup debut on Saturday evening after securing a place for the first time.

South Africa are at 49 in the world rankings and play 16th ranked Spain in Le Havre.

In the buildup to the tournament, the team has drawn four matches and lost six.

Nndivheni Mabidi from Diski Voice points out that South Africa played high-ranked teams including the Netherlands, the European champions. On top of that, the team have been placed in a very tough group which includes China and Germany.

This time we got quality opposition to prepare against... we are playing teams ranked very high compared to us.

Mabidi says this has affected confidence levels ahead of tonight's World Cup game.

Our best chance is to get a point against Spain.

Mabidi says however, that the team includes some outstanding players.

The obvious one is Thembi Kgatlana, she is the reigning African player of the year.

The match kicks off at 6pm but won't be broadcast live on SABC.

The broadcaster announced on Friday that it "was not in a financial position to bid for the rights."
