Hawks detain senior municipal officials and service providers

The Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) have come under repeated criticism when it comes to those found guilty of corruption, however, this looks set to change.

The Hawks have their sights set on those guilty of corruption in local municipalities.

To discuss which municipalities the Hawks are targeting, Ray White speaks to head lieutenant-general Godfrey Lebeya.

As you may already know, there are two sets of arrests that we effected in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The first one was the arrest of six individuals involved in the hiring of ghost employees in the municipality.

He says they then arrested eleven suspects for similar offences and their matter will be heard in court on 8 August.

Among those arrested are senior municipality officials as well as service providers and there is a possibility that we might be arresting others when we follow the money trail. There were two sets of arrests made in the Free State, and some of those arrested appear in more than one municipality.

He adds that arrests have been made in other municipalities for various counts of fraud and corruption.

Our investigation is not only limited to the provinces like Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Free State but where allegations arise, we will investigate.
