Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says motorists can call the radio control room on 011 375-5911 when traffic lights are off.

Following a WhatsApp alert urging motorists to use the Bompas and Jan Smuts with great caution due to multiple smash and grab attacks, Ray White speaks to JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar about this scourge.

We will deploy officers there, what we have noticed is a reduction in smash and grab in the inner city because we have officers directing traffic between 6am and 10am every day. That has helped to keep the traffic moving and not give anyone the opportunity to commit smash and grab.

Wayne Minnaar, Spokesperson - JMPD

He says JMPD has a new reaction unit that it launched on 14 May and it has made an impact and several arrests for various crimes including smash and grabbers have been made.

Minaar says people can call the emergency JMPD radio control centre when traffic lights are off at certain intersections.

The radio control room is the best number to call on 011 375-5911. That number operates for 24 hours, and we will send officers as soon as possible. But Jan Smuts and Bompas for us is something new on smash and grab so we will have to focus on that intersection.

Wayne Minnaar, Spokesperson - JMPD
