Victory for LGBTIQ community as Botswana court decriminalises homosexuality

Botswana's High Court has overturned a colonial-era law criminalising consensual same-sex relations on Tuesday.

The court ruled that the legislation was discriminatory, unconstitutional and against the public interest.

To discuss this landmark ruling, Nickolaus Bauer on the Xolani Gwala Show chats to EWN Africa correspondent Jean-Jacques Cornish.

This is very good news for the people of Botswana, they waited three months for this decision. These were three anxious months for activists who cheered in court today.

He adds that it is good to see Botswana getting rid of such a law that discriminates against people.

Now that same-sex relations have been decriminalised Botswana can now work on legislation to protect the rights of the LGBTIQ community.
