Victory for LGBTIQ community as Botswana court decriminalises homosexuality

EWN Africa correspondent Jean-Jacques Cornish says this is a victory for the gay community in that country.

Botswana's High Court has overturned a colonial-era law criminalising consensual same-sex relations on Tuesday.

Read: 'High Court ruling is a wonderful moment for LGBTI faith-based community'

The court ruled that the legislation was discriminatory, unconstitutional and against the public interest.

To discuss this landmark ruling, Nickolaus Bauer on the Xolani Gwala Show chats to EWN Africa correspondent Jean-Jacques Cornish.

This is very good news for the people of Botswana, they waited three months for this decision. These were three anxious months for activists who cheered in court today.

Jean-Jacques Cornish, African correspondent - EWN

He adds that it is good to see Botswana getting rid of such a law that discriminates against people.

Now that same-sex relations have been decriminalised Botswana can now work on legislation to protect the rights of the LGBTIQ community.

Jean-Jacques Cornish, African correspondent - EWN
