Institute for Economics and Peace chairman Steve Killelea says inequality must be dealt with.

The 13th edition of the Global Peace Index released on Tuesday reveals that the average level of global peacefulness improved very slightly in 2019 but South Africa is still lacking behind.

The report also revealed that South Africa is the 26th largest economic cost of violence as a percentage of GDP.

The Institute for Economics and Peace chairman Steve Killelea says the cost of violence in South Africa totals $145 billion.

That's about 14% of the GDP of the South African economy and that amounts to $1,700 per person. It is quite a considerable amount.

Steve Killelea, Chairman - Institute for Economics and Peace

The Institute for Economics and Peace gauges the on-going domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society, and the degree of militarisation in 163 countries and territories by taking into account 23 indicators.

He concurs that while it is crucial to address inequality.

There is also a need to have a free flow of information which could be provided by a free press. You also have to look at the level of corruption.
