Dr Bev Ditsie talks about the 1969 protest and its impact on the pursuit for equality of the LGBTIQ community.

America's Stonewall riot in 1969 has been marked as a global catalyst for the rights of the LGBTIQ community.

This month marks its 50th commemoration.

Taking a look at the impact of the protest and how it has informed the current fight for the equality of lesbian, gay, bi and trans people across the world, Claremont Graduate University's Dr Bev Ditsie sat down with Azania Mosaka about what more needs to be done.

What we neglect to understand is that while you have on one hand a law that is meant to be protecting all minorities and people, you also have attitudes that are on the ground that continue to prevail.

Dr Bev Ditsie - Activist

It is not just how they feel but it is the violence that is meted against very innocent people. The attacks continue, the attacks toward transgender people, non-binary...

Dr Bev Ditsie - Activist

While you may have a law that is there to protect, the attitudes on the ground need to be dealt with and that for me is the next frontier.
