Judge Elize Steyn in the Western Cape High Court said the businessman’s actions were cowardly, deceitful and self-centered.

Less than a month after being found guilty of the 2018 murder of his wife Rob Packham has been handed a 22-year jail sentence.

The Constantia businessman was sentenced to 20 years for the murder to run concurrently with a 4-year term for defeating or obstructing the administration of justice.

In sentencing, Judge Elize Steyn said Packham’s actions were cowardly, deceitful and self-centered.

EWN reporter Lauren Isaacs was in court on Wednesday.

She focused a lot on the prevalence of femicide. She spoke about how domestic violence had become a scourge and how the courts had to send a clear message.

The court had previously heard arguments for mitigation of sentencing, including from Packham's own daughter Kerry who pleaded with the court not to pass down a long custodial sentence.

She had asked the court not to put her Dad away forever. She wanted her Dad to be part of his future grandchildren's lives. She spoke very fondly of him.

Isaacs says Judge Steyn was scathing in her assessment of Packham's attitude throughout the trial.

She said he was seemingly not concerned with how the murder must have traumatised his daughters.

Gill Packham's body was found in the boot of her burnt-out BMW at the Diep River train station in February 2018.
