[LISTEN] More research underway to prevent HIV infections

President of the South African Medical Research Council Dr Glenda Gray says researchers are looking for prevention strategies that are long lasting and do not rely on putting a condom on or taking a pill every day.

She says currently they are exploring two kinds of strategies to prevent the contraction of HIV using a vaccine approach.

One of these is AMP - antibody mediated prevention.

With advancements in medical technology, we were able to identify these broadly neutralising antibodies and make monoclonal antibodies, and evaluate the infusing of these monoclonal antibodies.

Dr Glenda Gray, President - South African Medical Research Council

Now we doing these extended studies at a global level to see whether by infusing these antibodies every eight weeks into people, we can prevent them getting HIV.
