Azania Mosaka chats to Netcare Hospital Group's Rene Grobler to unpack their findings.

The Netcare Hospital Group has reviewed medibank data for the years 2015 to 2018 on patients who were treated in their 45 emergency departments around the country, specifically looking at those that have been attacked or bitten by animals.

National quality and systems manager (trauma & emergency) at the hospital group Rene Grobler spoke to Azania Mosaka to unpack the data, which found that animals which are most likely to cause injuries are elephants, snakes and elands.

The eland is the animal that came as a surprise to us which causes significant penetrating injuries and has a high body weight - that weight causes crush injuries.

Grobler says hippos cause more mortalities.

The patients included in our studies are those that arrived alive. A lot of time, with the force of the hippo and injuries caused, those patients do not survive to the hospital.
