Ace vs Ramaphosa
Veteran journalist and columnist Sam Mkokeli analyses the power struggles within the African National Congress.

It seems the ANC's internal battles are far from over with reports of general-secretary Ace Magashule orchestrating a coup to undermine President Cyril Ramaphosa.

To discuss these latest developments in the ruling party Bongani Bingwa talks to veteran journalist and columnist Sam Mkokeli.

We have bulls that use different strategies, one is very clumsy and the other doesn't rush to throw in the killer move. We saw with Nasrec, the man who earned the title buffalo didn't rush to make his moves and everyone thought he doesn't have what it takes.

But we are seeing now that Ace is jumping in and he is quite clumsy and it looks like an interesting battle.

Mkokeli admits that Magashule holds an important position within the ANC and he is been trying to exercise that by questioning the mandate of the Reserve Bank as well as asserting who will be heading portfolio committees.

The important move now is to see what decisions will be made with regards to Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, adds Mkokeli.

The lady has struggled with the office. I mean there are few incidents looking at the issue with Minister Gugile Nkwinti and the Absa bank issue... She has become a risk to the whole institution framework.

Sam Mkokeli, veteran journalist and columnist

There could be a political move taken in Parliament to remove her based on a number of cases. A two-thirds majority is required to remove the public protector after an investigation is done.

What does the future hold for Ace Magashule?

Mkokeli says it will be hard for the ANC to remove Magashule as he was elected under very controversial circumstances.

He will probably stay on till the end of the term, until the next ANC conference, unless something really big happens outside the space of politics.

Sam Mkokeli, veteran journalist and columnist

Mkokeli says he is expecting another feel-good speech from Ramaphosa when he delivers his State of the Nation Address, another 'Thuma Mina' because he says, "the man drips honey from the mouth."

He says Ramaphosa will also give an indication of his plans to grow the economy.
