Analysts outline the important issues that Thursday evening's State of the Nation Address needs to deliver.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Thursday evening. This will signal the start of the sixth democratic Parliament of South Africa.

The theme for this Sona speech is "Let's grow South Africa together as we celebrate 25 years of freedom".

The president is expected to reflect on the country’s political, social and economic welfare and will also account to the nation on government’s work and its programme of action for the next five years.

Kieno Kammies talks to economist Dr Iraj Abedian and political analyst Sanusha Naidu about what to expect from President Cyril Ramaphosa as he prepares to deliver his third State of the Nation Address.

Abedian says there are two key points to look out for in the Sona.

The most important thing I think we should look for is to see if the president finally has come up with a credible solution for the country's energy problem, without which nothing much can happen going forward.

The second thing to look for is whether the president has changed the approach to economic policymaking...if he comes up with a specific programme to removing obstacles to investment in each specific sector.

If he does not remove obstacles, investment will not flow back into the economy and GDP, economic growth and employment will not turn around.

Naidu adds that there is a hangover of the internal party problems with the African National Congress (ANC).

She says there has to be plans and policy certainty but Ramaphosa has to convince people to believe in him despite all the challenges.

How much will the president be able to instill confidence and trust?

Sanusha Naidu, Political analyst - Institute for Global Dialogue
