Toy Story 4
Critic Gayle Edmunds reviews the fourth film in the popular franchise.

Nearly a quarter of a century since the first Toy Story, the fourth film in the franchise has hit our screens.

Managing editor and film critic at City Press, Gayle Edmunds says the nine years since Toy Story 3 have been wisely spent in developing a great script and a new character.

The main new character is a created toy that Bonnie makes in kindergarten... His existential crisis is he feels the trash is where he belongs.

Woody helps him to understand what it means to be a toy and to be a support to your child.

There's a road trip and the whole idea of what your purpose in life is and all those deep things, but actually it's really sweet, beautifully animated, wonderfully funny...

Gayle Edmunds, Managing editor and film critic at City Press

Edmunds says while it is nice to have the background of the earlier movies, kids can still enjoy Toy Story 4 as a stand-alone feature.

It is a complete story in and of itself.
