Communications Workers Union rejects MultiChoice's plan to cut over 2000 jobs

2000 retrenchments
The union will meet with the company on Wednesday to discuss among others the upskilling of workers instead of retrenching.

Communications Workers Union general secretary Aubrey Tshabalala says it rejects the issue of retrenchments by MultiChoice.

The pay-TV operator plans to cut more than 2,000 jobs at its call centres and walk-in services over the next two months.

It says its customers abandoned call centres and other traditional contact centres for digital services, meaning that it needed to adapt to changing trends in the market.

However, Tshabalala says because the company announced that it made a profit in the past financial year, it means the reasons to retrench are not based on financial challenges.

The union will be meeting with MultiChoice on Wednesday to discuss among other the upskilling of workers instead of retrenching.

We need to have a transition where we will take our people to the next phase so that we don't just drop a bomb and cut jobs. That will not only have a negative impact in our country but to workers as well. We have to be sensitive in that particular area.

Aubrey Tshabalala, General secretary - Communications Workers Union
