Budget the biggest problem for shelters in SA - Commission for Gender Equality

The Commission for Gender Equality has released a preliminary report on the state of shelters in South Africa.

Acting chairperson Tamara Mathebula says they sampled some shelters from the nine provinces.

Speaking to Clement Manyathela, Mathebula says the main issue raised during the site visits was in relation to budget allocations and when they receive the funds.

We were worried about the fact that all the centres were complaining about budget allocation. If ever they are given a budget, they were paid late.

In some shelters, the infrastructure and security is a problem and some facilities were very old. Basic things like sleeping beds were not conducive.

Mathebula says they are concerned about the awareness about the shelters.

Quite a number of women in South Africa are not aware of these shelters.
