[LISTEN] EC House of Traditional Leaders 'outraged' at deaths of initiates

The Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders says says it is outraged at the number of deaths that have occurred since the start of the winter initiation season.

Three deaths were reported last week.

Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders of South Africa's chairperson Nkosi Nonkonyana says there must be a joint effort to tackle the issue of illegal traditional surgeons and schools.

There are these criminals that are doing this, to bring this custom into disrepute and actually denying children the right to life.

Meanwhile chairperson of the Ingoma Forum for the Department of Health in Mpumalanga Musa Thokwane has condemned what he says is the commercialisation of the initiation.

There are people trying to make money off of initiation and some have been successful because in this country there is no law that governs the running of this culture.
