Honeymoon scuppered: Local man describes being scammed R60K by Destiny Holidays

CapeTalk listener Paul had planned his honeymoon, and he and 32 others, lost over R2m to a seeming fly-by-night travel agency.

CapeTalk listener Paul shares his ordeal about how he and 32 others have allegedly been scammed to the tune of R2.1m by a couple operating the now liquidated travel agency, Destiny Holidays.

The company is run by Vincent and Marelize De Bruyn.

Paul explains that he was planning his honeymoon through Destiny and paid a full amount in January. A few weeks before his wedding he started inquiring about his flight tickets and that's when he says the nightmare began.

When the stories started they initially told me about double bookings and late payments. The day before we were supposed to leave I received an email from Vincent De Bruyn saying sorry I can't honour the booking I'll just refund you your money. Needless to say, I never received my money.

Paul has since reached out to others who have been scammed by Destiny and now there are 32 people with similar claims.

They have resorted to reporting the matter to the police and the Hawks for further investigations.

I lost a total of R63 000 for a holiday to the Maldives but there were a lot of extras which we planned once we were there.

Paul, Caller

It kind of spoiled the whole moment because you plan your wedding for a few years and this happens.

After hounding the owners, the company now says it has entered voluntary liquidation.

Paul has now discovered that in April a relative to Vincent and Marelize De Bruyn started a new company called Perfect Travel.

This new company has a website and offers packages identical to Destiny Holidays.

He also believes that the couple did the same thing previously, using a subsidiary of popular and legitimate business Harveys Travel back in 2014.

Harveys Travel had to intervene and eventually pay the disgruntled clients.
