The average salary for those in South Africa lucky enough to have a job is not enough to get by on.

About 29% of workers earn less than the R3500 national minimum wage, according to recruitment platform Giraffe.

Of those who earn above the legal threshold, the average was R6400.

In South Africa, a “living wage income” – the amount required for a dignified quality of life – is estimated at R6570 per month.

About 70% of the working population earns less than that.

Retail is South Africa’s largest but most exploitive employer.

IT and Banking, the smallest employers, have the highest pay.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Anish Shivdasani, CEO at Giraffe.
