AG keen to implement new anti-corruption powers
We're likely to see Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu flexing his newly-acquired anti-corruption powers by the time the next round of municipal audits are due.
That's the opinion of Municipal IQ's Karen Heese who's been speaking in light of the release of AG Makwetu's most recent report on Wednesday.
Only 8% of municipalities received a clean audit in the 2017-2018 financial year.
This year there's definitely a despondent tone on his part, speaking about a serious regression and what lies under that - an unwillingness to listen to the AG's recommendations.Karen Heese, Economist - Municipal IQ

Under the Public Audit Amendment Act, the auditor general will be able to issue binding recommendations to underperforming municipalities.
Speaking on Wednesday ahead of the release of his report Makwetu expanded on the extent of his power under the amended act.
“The last recourse that our office has is to consider where they should not initiate a process that will trigger a certificate of debt that has been quantified in respect of losses incurred that will be the issued directly to either an accounting officer of individual members.”Kimi Makwetu, Auditor General
It's obviously something he's very willing to implement, that he feels is necessary to implement.Karen Heese, Economist - Municipal IQ
