After assisting a bleeding fellow passenger on a flight about to leave Namibia, just moments before a plane took off on Friday, former health minister, and now minister of home affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi is being hailed as a hero.
Kieno Kammies chats to the minister about his heroics.
It happened on Friday in the late afternoon when I came from Namibia, somebody was bleeding profusely through the nose, and I rushed in to help. He said he stood for a long time in the sun in Namibia and the plane delayed and his nose started bleeding. I thought it was just natural for me to assist as that is what I have been trained to do— Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister - Home Affairs
The minister's heroics were captured on social media by musician Ntokozo Mahlangu, more popularly known as Shade.
Shade said he had been travelling from Namibia to SA when he witnessed Motsoaledi in action after the plane's cabin crew appeared to have failed to assist the man.
On my way from Namibia 🇳🇦 a passenger started bleeding excessively (nose bleeding), to a point the cabin crew looked a bit helpless. Luckily, our former Minister of Health @HealthZA Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi was on board and he jumped out of his seat to help and the bleeding stopped! pic.twitter.com/AuWsyRvF8B— EP Recording Underway (@SHADE_WORLDWIDE) June 30, 2019
Motsoaledi says this is not the first time he assisted someone in a plane.
In 200 he was flying to Paris when an announcement was made whether there was a doctor on board.
I didn't raise my hand because I had not been practicing for a while. But when they called for the third time, I raised my hand. I found this woman who I think was in pre-coma and was in a hypoglycemic coma. She was a diabetic who took insulin without food and she was then in a pre-coma. I tried my best to give her sugar water, but it didn't help. Fortunately, in the plane, there was a first-aid kit and I found glucose water there which I injected through the veins.— Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister - Home Affairs
