Police to escort paramedics following attacks, says City of Johannesburg

It’s understood Cosmo City emergency management services members were attending to an assault case when they were assaulted.

MMC for Community Safety at City of Johannesburg Michael Sun says metro police or the South African Police Service (SAPS) will now assist in escorting paramedics when needed.

The move follows the suspension of services in Cosmo City after three crew members were attacked and an emergency vehicle was damaged at the weekend.

Sun says calls coming from the area and other crime hotspots will be reassessed.

We obviously need to reassess these calls coming from these hotspots so when we have a situation where we believe the calls could be not genuine, our ambulance or firefighters will only be escorted to the scene if there is JMPD or SAPS.

For the time being we are obliged to ensure that our residents are safe, that includes when there is cases of emergency then we must attend to them.

We have received these fake calls before where our ambulances are called out to the middle of nowhere.

The assessments can really be done once you get there but we are obviously taking extra precautions and those involve when the calls come through these hotspot areas and the caller is not very much able to give us more details that our dispatcher can say is this a genuine call? We obviously will aggregate that precautionary measure and get our JMPD officers out there....
