Talis report
Basic Education Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule unpacks findings by the Talis report.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshega and her deputy Dr Reginah Mhaule on Tuesday presented the findings of a report that reveals the state of education in South Africa.

The Teaching and Learning International Research Study (Talis) investigates the conditions of teaching and learning in schools across the world.

[RELATED] How dire is the state of public schools in the country?

South Africa is the only African state represented in the list of international countries participating in the Talis research study.

The report found that one in four teachers have not completed any tertiary education.

To discuss the report findings, Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala Show chats to Mhaule.

The findings show that South Africa is mostly doing well. Issues, where they talk about underqualified teachers, is scarce in this report. But the report said we are doing very well with the diverse circumstances our teachers find themselves in.

Dr Reginah Mhaule, Deputy minister - Basic Education

She reiterates that South Africa is performing above average in most areas investigated.

We are saying that this report will be used for policy decision making as the educational sector. This report will set the basis for our own decision making to fix things like the classroom ratio of one teacher to 35 pupils.

Dr Reginah Mhaule, Deputy minister - Basic Education

Mhaule says the report also showed that South African teachers were able to handle themselves when addressing bullying in the classrooms.
