Hong Kong extradition protests
Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters who forced their way into the legislature causing extensive damage.

China has condemned the violent protests in Hong Kong on Monday which coincided with the 22nd anniversary of the city's handover from UK to Chinese rule.

Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters who forced their way into the legislature causing extensive damage.

It followed the latest in a series of peaceful protest by pro-democracy demonstrators over proposed legislation allowing extraditions to China.

If enacted the law would allow the extradition of criminal suspects to mainland China.

There is widespread anger and frustration...and push back against this bill. They see it as an encroachment on their common law legal system by the communist government in Bejing.

While the bill has been indefinitely withdrawn, protests continue, alongside calls for Chief Executive Carrie Lam to resign.

That wasn't enough for the community. They simply don't believe that this bill is dead and buried. There is real distrust there.

Kirsty Needham, China correspondent - The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age

Those protesting the bill say it threatens Hong Kong's autonomy under the "one country, two systems" deal.
