The trial initiative means customers will be able to buy a wide range of loose fruit and vegetables rather than pre-packaged.

Supermarket chain Pick n Pay has announced it's introducing 'nude walls' at 13 of its stores.

It means customers will be able to buy a wide range of fruit and vegetables loose, rather than pre-packaged.

You can just pick them up, you buy them without any packaging at all, use your own container or one of the ones we provide.

John Bradshaw, Marketing director - Pick n Pay

The trial is a nod to the growing pressure retailers are under to reduce the use of environmentally harmful plastic.

Marketing director John Bradshaw says while many fruits and vegetables are already sold loose in their stores, the nude zones will feature a wider range of produce.

Things like sweetcorn or mealies, different types of mushrooms, tomatoes.

John Bradshaw, Marketing director - Pick n Pay

And the retailer's efforts at don't end there:

We're also providing reusable bags...and we now have paper bags that people can use as barrier bags.

John Bradshaw, Marketing director - Pick n Pay

If the trial is successful the initiative will be rolled out to more stores.
