'Lifestyle audits on all SOEs board members must be prioritised'
The Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises is calling for lifestyle audits on all board members and director-generals of state-owned enterprises.
To discuss what the committee is calling for, Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala Show speaks to chairperson Khayalethu Magaxa.
Yesterday we received the presentation of the annual performance plan by the Department of Public Enterprises. We were pleased with the progress that was explained to us. However, several issues need to be dealt with as a matter of urgency.Khayalethu Magaxa, Chairperson - Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises
He adds that in the fifth Parliament, the committee picked up a lot of problems, including corruption and state capture.
And those problems affected some directors, CEOs, senior management, which includes board members, and they allowed the corruption and state capture to embedded in SOEs. We know that the situation we are in now is a legacy of those malpractices.Khayalethu Magaxa, Chairperson - Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises
The committee made a number of recommendations including the lifestyle audits and the re-establishment and monitoring of boards of SOEs. Lifestyle audits need to be prioritised, in order to achieve clean governance in SOEs, he explains.
