The power cuts are suspected to be caused by acts vandalism.

City Power says it has worked throughout the night to ensure that power is restored in Alexandra.

The township was plunged into darkness this week.

The utility says the issue may be caused by acts of vandalism.

The power cuts were basically caused by what we suspect to have been acts of vandalism because the doors to the chamber of the sub-station were broken into.

The work was almost complete so we should be reconnecting electricity to most of the houses. In fact, some of them have already been connected.

Meanwhile, Eskom says large parts of Winterveld in Tshwane remain without power due tampering with meters and transformers.

The utility says power could not be restored in areas where customers were not buying or paying for service.

Eskom's senior manager for operations and maintenance, Daphne Mokoena, had the following to say:

We cannot continue like this because it is a cost to company.

It may be that we have customers that are paying in that particular transformer zone. Customers must allow us to come into their areas to come and audit their meters so that we remove or disconnect those that have tampered.
