Pregnant Elina Maseko should not have been mocked about her age - MEC Masuku

Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku
Gauteng Health MEC Dr Bandile Masuku addresses the issues at the state of provincial medical facilities.

Week in and week out Gauteng Health MEC Dr Bandile Masuku has been dealing with one horror story after another at different health facilities in the province.

A month ago, Martha Marais was chained to benches at Mamelodi Hospital and recently, Elina Maseko who is in her 40s was turned away from Stanza Bopapa Community Health Centre in Mamelodi, because she was reportedly told she was too old to be pregnant.

She later gave birth outside the clinic.

The Department of Health is facing R1.1bn in medical negligence claims from this year alone.

To speak about the state of Gauteng health facilities, Bongani Bingwa sits down with MEC Maseko.

I think all our health workers are maintaining the oath, but of course, there are people who will not deliberately - but because of circumstances and context - will find themselves in a state where they decide that they don't care anymore. Society must not ostracise these health workers, they must correct them and make sure that their behaviour doesn't get repeated.

Dr Bandile Masuku, MEC - Gauteng Health Department

The sector needs to be at a point where it learns from all the errors so that it improves and not repeats its mistakes.

Masuku says the pregnant Maseko should not have been mocked about her age.

But when you are over 45, we don't allow those women to deliver in primary health care facilities by midwives. Those are high-risk patients and the number of problems that come high-risk older women become immense. She was supposed to be assessed and be transferred.

Dr Bandile Masuku, MEC - Gauteng Health Department

He adds that it is not entirely true to say that the elderly Mrs Marais who was found tied to a bench didn't receive councilling.

Maybe she didn't receive enough counselling, that is something that we are going to correct to make sure that she gets comprehensive counselling.

Dr Bandile Masuku, MEC - Gauteng Health Department

Listen below to the MEC's plans on improving the health sector:
