947 Breakfast Club host Anele Mdoda discusses her initiative to build proper toilets in needy schools in South Africa.

More than 3,000 schools have pit latrines, with Eastern Cape, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal dominating.

Through a crowdfunding campaign in partnership with Domestos, 947 Breakfast Club host Anele Mdoda is on a mission to change this.

Mdoda aims to build 20 new toilets for each school in 2019 and raise more than R1m to construct new toilets at different schools around the country.

To discuss this initiative, Bongani Bingwa chats to Mdoda.

What happens is at every school, especially the ones with pit latrines, we put 20 proper structured toilets. Also, I don't think that I am going to stop, it is not like a campaign that I will raise money and when I get to R1.1m and then stop.

Anele Mdoda, Host - 947 Breakfast Club

She says Domestos has provided her with the platform to go out and do this because the company deals with toilets.

And if there are no toilets, there is no Domestos. For them, it was that they didn't just want to be the guys who say: 'Here clean your toilets with our products.' We want to be the guys who ensure that the entire country has proper sanitation."

She says two incidents inspired her to be part of this initiative.

When I was in university, my roommate from Limpopo saw a toilet for the first time. Secondly, it was Lumka Mkhethwa's story. Children shouldn't be dying in pit latrines, there is no way. How do you tell a parent that their child is not going to come home because she drowned in a pit latrine? There are stories that just stick to you. Lumka's story stuck to me and I said enough is enough.

We have broken ground at Thembalethu Primary School in Lusikisiki and we are opening those toilets on 30 July.
