Acting legend says he loves telling stories and theatre is his first love.

South African legend Dr John Kani says he is thrilled to be part of the much-anticipated remake of The Lion King.

At the age of 75, Dr Kani says he loves his work but the red carpet can be tiring for him.

Playing the role of Rafiki, Dr Kani says the directors asked him how he wanted to portray the old wise Rafiki and he explained the tribes and cultures in Africa.

I said The Lion King is an African story and it is taking place in a country in the continent of Africa. These lions are not in a zoo.

I asked the director that Rafiki should not look like me because it works well in Africa.

Dr John Kani, Actor and writer

Dr Kani expresses his love for storytelling and how theatre is his first love.

I am basically a storyteller. I love telling stories.

Dr John Kani, Actor and writer

John Kani is not me. He is a brand, he is a business that is managed by me. He never takes over my life. John Kani doesn't come to my house; at my house, there is Mandi's husband.

Dr John Kani, Actor and writer

Speaking on his latest movie Murder Mystery, Dr Kani says he emphasised that in his culture he is an elder and he can't be called John by teenagers.

Under 18, please don't call me John. From 18 to 25 you call me Dr Kani. From 25 to 35 you call me Bab'Kani. From 35 to 40 you can call me BraJohn. It's only when you are over 70 you can call me John.
