#LeadSA: TED-Ed manager Steph Lee explains how children are empowered through the skill of public speaking.

The SAVE Foundation works to empower various township communities around Cape Town as well as protect wildlife in areas of Africa.

One of its projects is the TED-Ed Club which encourages young people to pursue their ideas and provides training to tell their stories effectively.

The students are helped to develop skills that will also benefit them later in the working world, such as research, public speaking, and English comprehension.

Club manager Steph Lee tells CapeTalk's Africa Melane that the programme has expanded to include 120 kids this year in Cape Town and beyond, after starting with just seven children in Dunoon in 2017.

The talks that came out of them were incredible. We had talks on xenophobia, apartheid, medical malpractice... things you don't expect 12/13-year-old kids to be talking about.

It's always a story only they can tell.

She says the aim is to build confidence for kids to be able to tell their story to an audience.

For a lot of them it's the only time they have to really talk in a safe space about things like this, so it's great to encourage them to do that on a wider platform because they have ideas coming left, right and centre.

In Cape Town, the talks are presented on the second Thursday of the month at the Backpack hostel, culminating in a gala event featuring the ten best speakers at the end of the year.
