Gupta Waterkloof scandal: 'Bruce Koloane is not subject to military code'
Former Justice Department director-general Nonkululeko Sindane told the state capture commission that former chief of state protocol BruceKoloane failed to follow procedure when he allowed the Gupta chartered flight to land at Waterkloof Air Force Base in 2013.
Bongani Bingwa speaks to South African National Defence Union (Sandu) national secretary, Advocate Pikkie Greef and asked him if it is correct that Koloane has been made the fall guy for the Waterkloof Guptagate scandal and then was appointed South African ambassador to the Netherlands.
No, of course, that was not good enough.Pikkie Greef, National secretary - Sandu
Greef sets the record straight.
I don't know where the story comes from that he pleaded guilty to contravening a military code. Bruce Koloane is not subject to military code nor military legislation.Pikkie Greef, Spokesperson - Sandu
As far as we understand it he pleaded guilty to some departmental charges in Dirco, the nature of which has still not been publicised to anybody...but in the end, we know he was awarded with this ambassador's post.Pikkie Greef, National secretary - Sandu
Greef says when the Guptas were denied landing rights and VIP treatment at Waterkloof airbase in 2013, they began 'pulling strings' for alternative arrangements and allegedly engaged with Koloane.
Koloane then tried to use the contacts he had in the airforce...and in that process, he spoke to Lieutenant-Colonel Christine Anderson...and she referred him to the necessary powers that be.Pikkie Greef, National secretary - Sandu
Greef says after engaging the airforce command post, Kolane and the Indian High Commission generated an email which purported to be a request for authorisation for this flight.
It gave it a semblance of officiality.Pikkie Greef, National secretary - Sandu
He says it was processed by a junior official at the command post.
Despite the previous Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's extensive investigation into the matter, the current Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has issued a very brief report saying the investigation has been stopped, he says.
Greef says Anderson was never given the right to reply to accusations against her.
Concerns were raised that the scope of the investigation was not broad enough, says Greef.
