Peter Moyo's lawyer speaks out about challenging axing from Old Mutual

Peter Moyo is accused of following a deliberate strategy of attempting to divert attention from his own actions to Trevor Manuel.

The story of the suspension followed by the expulsion of one of the continent's best known chief executives was one that shook the business world, so much so that the share price of Old Mutual was trading of the insurer at 5% lower.

Peter Moyo has now taken the matter to the court, challenging his dismissal. Moyo wants his dismissal to be declared "unlawful, unconstitutional and null and void" - and is also asking for contractual damages against Old Mutual.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Eric Mabuza, the lawyer representing Peter Moyo.

Anyone accused of the things Mr Moyo is accused of would fight to save their career.

Old Mutual issued a long statement rubbishing his integrity, so he has every right to defend his integrity.

Mabuza says they await Old Mutual's court papers for next week's appearance but adds these are now four days late.

Instead, they continue to issue statements that they will respond in court.

Old Mutual has stated that it believes this is a strategy by Moyo to 'cast aspersions on other directors of Old Mutual by making false and unwarranted allegations directed, in particular, at the Board Chair', Trevor Manuel.

Mabuza responds to these claims saying, to this day they do not know what Moyo has done wrong.

What should have happened is they should have put all these allegations in a properly convened hearing where he would have been able to defend himself. So there is no diversion at all.
