[LISTEN] Lindiwe Zulu aims to restore confidence in her department
Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu says she wants to ensure accountability and build confidence in her department.
Zulu joined Eusebius McKaiser in studio on Monday to share her early reflections since taking up her new portfolio last month.
She says she has already addressed the executives at the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and the National Development Agency on a way forward.
Give us an opportunity and give us a chance to see what it is we need to do to build that confidence. Help us in terms of ensuring that we hold our own accountable.Lindiwe Zulu, Minister of Social Development
We need to clean out what we believe did not go right. I have addressed and met with the executives of Sassa... I have said: 'I need agile people who are going to be able to respond properly and positively to our people because the complaints that are out there are all too much.'Lindiwe Zulu, Minister of Social Development
We want to put plans in place that are going to make people feel we are going to do everything differently and we have to apologise for anything else that happened and that didn't go right.Lindiwe Zulu, Minister of Social Development
Zulu also called on every government department to assist with the creation of jobs and youth employment in South Africa.
She says most social grant recipients are young and more needs to be done to empower them, even under an underperforming economy.
That amount of money that goes to younger people, in my view, that is the money we are supposed to use to see how we can get the younger people off that [social grants] and be a bit productive by ensuring that we give them the tools to be productiveLindiwe Zulu, Minister of Social Development
The economy is not doing very well but when it is not doing well, it should not be an excuse for us not to be out there and empowering our communities.Lindiwe Zulu, Minister of Social Development
The Department of Small Business Development has got a huge potential here to help those that are co-operatives, help those that have started their own business, support them. I do believe that any individual who relies on social grants will never be adequate because the social grant itself is not adequate.Lindiwe Zulu, Minister of Social Development
She says she is set to meet with provincial MECs for social development on Thursday.
