DA calls for eThekwini municipality to be dissolved

While there is uncertainty over whether or not embattled eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality mayor Zandile Gumede will continue her tenure, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal has asked for the municipality to be dissolved and put under administration.

Gumede's 30 days leave of absence comes to an end on Tuesday after a resolution by the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal that she take the break to afford the governing party time to finalise her matter.

Gumede is currently out on R50,000 bail after being arrested on fraud and corruption charges for allegedly defrauding the metro on a tender worth R208m.

DA KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson for co-operative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) Mbali Ntuli says there are too many people implicated.

Quite frankly right now, there are so many people that are implicated, from her the mayor to the deputy head of waste removal, supply chain management, as well as 62 councillors of the ANC.

There is a stalemate in this region and in this caucus and the ANC has decided to take these decisions upon themselves politically rather than going the legislative and legal route.

Ntuli says the DA is also looking into whether or not Gumede violated her bail conditions when she delivered her budget speech.

The conditions were that she could not speak to any officials or witnesses, as well as continue in some of her roles as mayor and she seems to have perhaps circumvented that by delivering the budget speech. We have asked for that to be reviewed and are waiting for a legal opinion.
