'Communities MUST be involved in efforts to tackle Cape Flats crime'

It was another weekend of bloodshed across the Cape Flats region of Cape Town, with police confirming 13 people had been killed since Friday evening.

An investigation is currently underway into the murders of six women aged between 18 and 26 who were gunned down in Philippi East.

Five men, between the ages of 18 and 39-years-old, were shot dead and another was injured during two separate shooting incidents on Saturday night.

Local residents say they're angry that effective measures are not being taken to tackle the plague of gangsterism, despite a visit from Police Minister Bheki Cele recently.

John Cloete, is from the United Public Safety Front, a coalition of civil society organisations in the Western Cape.

Crime and gangsterism is not a police or law enforcement issue only... it's a socio-economic issue.

John Cloete, Founder - United Public Safety Front

We have now embarked on a process where we are asking again for a multi-agency delivery action mechanism... but this time also including community organisations.
