Saps WC spokesperson Col Andre Traut disagrees saying the SANDF is not an option to play a law enforcement role.

A spike in gang-related violence in the Western Cape has shocked the nation.

The weekend statistics have reignited the call to send in the South African National Defence Force to the area.

Thirteen people have been killed in Philippi on the Cape Flats since Friday evening.

An investigation is currently underway into the murders of six women aged between 18 and 26 who were gunned down in Philippi East.

Five men, between the ages of 18 and 39-years-old, were shot dead and another was injured during two separate shooting incidents on Saturday night.

Eusebius McKaiser speaks to Western Cape Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz who says by Monday morning the number had reached 55.

Our stats already for the year is at 1 600 deaths in the Western Cape. They are not all gang related, 40% of those are gang-related.

The official stats we got from the police was that 13 people died over the weekend and that figure at six o'clock in the morning was 55. It was stab wounds, it was blunt objects and shootings.

Our outrage is what do we do to stop it so people can have a right to their safety and security. All these deaths are confined to 23 areas in the Cape Flats and we have ten hot spots.

Albert Fritz, Western Cape Community Safety MEC

Fritz says the army should be sent to the Cape Flats and stabilise the situation.

People are dying. Let us get guns and sort it out. Get the army with proper weapons and sort out and stabilise the situation and go and shoot anyone.

Albert Fritz, Western Cape Community Safety MEC

Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut says they have deployed additional resources to the identified areas.

He says investigations of these crimes is taking priority.

We activated a 72-action plan over the weekend which entails additional resources deployed in the Philippi area and other areas where murders are prevalent.

Colonel Andre Traut, Spokesperson - Saps Western Cape

I don't think it is an option to work with the SANDF when it comes to law enforcement. They are not trained for that we are trained for that.

Colonel Andre Traut, Spokesperson - SAPS Western Cape

We are not underresourced; we have enough resources to deal with the situation.

Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa Reverend Dr Llewellyn MacMaster says the communities need to come together and help fight gangsterism.

It cannot be just a police matter or just sending in the army. I hear the crime of the people from the communities and that says for me, there is frustrations and desperation because of this ongoing violence.

Rev Dr Llewellyn MacMaster, Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa

You cannot look at gangsterism in the Cape Flats in a simplistic way. There is a normalisation of violence in our society.

Bontehuewel joint peace forum spokesperson Nadia Mayman says there is no place where it is safe.

We don't enjoy walking around the area because it is too risky. Our kids don't enjoy the freedom of playing outside. Gangs have overtaken our parks.

Cape Town lobby group 'Gatvol Cape Townians' spokesperson Fadiel Adams shares how life is in the areas.

On two occasions I've had to walk my children past a dead body on their way to school.

Fadiel Adams, Gatvol Cape Townians

The Colonel has the audacity to say the Saps has enough resources, that is a smack in the face of all the mothers who have lost a child.

Fadiel Adams, Spokesperson - Gatvol Cape Townians

The Mayor of Mitchells Plain, where I live, is a gangster with a prison number. I live in parallel states. One I pay tax to and one that runs the Cape Flats.
