'The challenge is when cut-offs happen, Eskom cuts off even paying people'

ANC councillor and protest convenor Matshidiso Mfikoe unpacks reasons behind the party marching to the utility's offices.

The African National Congress (ANC) caucus in Johannesburg on Tuesday handed over a memorandum of demands to Eskom.

The caucus is calling for the power utility to fulfil its mandate of providing the City's residents with electricity.

[RELATED] This mess that is Eish-kom, is the ANC's doing, says Eusebius

One of the biggest concerns is that residents in areas such as Ivory Park, Soweto, Orange Farm and Diepsloot are left in darkness for an unjustifiable period, without any explanation or assistance from Eskom.

To discuss the march, Bongani Bingwa chats to party councillor and protest convenor Matshidiso Mfikoe.

We are not against Eskom, all we are saying is that before Eskom makes a decision, they need to communicate with communities. They need to give councillors enough information because, in the end, it is the councillors that are sitting with these communities. And councillors must answer difficult questions they don't have answers to.

Matshidiso Mfikoe, Councillor - ANC

She says when communities don't have answers from Eskom, they demand answers from councillors.

They have been held hostage, they have been threatened and some of their windows have been. And this is a losing game because whether windows are broken or not, there are still no answers from Eskom.

Matshidiso Mfikoe, Councillor - ANC

Mfikoe adds that councillors have urged the power utility to deal with illegal connections.

But the biggest challenge is that when cut-offs happen, Eskom cuts off people who are paying. And some people are dependent on electricity for their survival. You can penalise none payers for people that are actually paying for electricity.
