Are we facing the collapse of the SABC if government fails to bail it out?

SOS Coalition's Duduetsang Makuse says 'dire' does not begin to describe the potential calamity facing the public broadcaster.

While Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications expects a new turnaround strategy for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in two months’ time, questions continue to be raised over its future.

The committee wants Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams to move with speed to resolve the liquidity crisis at the public broadcaster.

It emerged earlier this week that Finance Minister Tito Mboweni turned down the corporation’s application for the much-needed R3.2bn government guarantee.

SOS Coalition national convener Duduetsang Makuse says 'dire' does not begin to describe the potential calamity facing the public broadcaster.

I think the collapse of our public broadcaster is very much possible at this stage.

I think even using words like dire and desperate, those words don't begin to describe the potential calamity that is facing them right now

Makuse says the organisation has a broad idea of what is contained in the strategy - which includes reducing the much of the irregular expenditure.

The other component would be reducing debt and finding ways to make sure they service their debt, but that they don't create new and unnecessary debt.

She says there seems to be a lack of political will to get a sound strategy that would have been approved by Parliament and Treasury.

It seems as if the powers that be have been dragging their feet.
