Executive director Stasha Jordan says not all mothers can breastfeed their premature babies.

The South African Breastmilk Reserve is appealing to nursing mothers to donate breast milk.

Executive director Stasha Jordan tells Joanne Joseph that they are currently running out of milk in their reserves.

The South African Breastmilk Reserve is a body that keeps these stocks for the benefits of babies who require breastmilk.

Jordan explains why breastmilk is important.

Donated breastmilk plays an absolutely integral role in the care of very low birth-weight premature babies.

Stasha Jordan, Executive director - South African Breastmilk Reserve

She says not all mothers can breastfeed their premature babies.

Often we have mommies that are critically ill themselves.

Jordan says if a mother is living a healthy lifestyle she should consider donating.

We are looking for mommies that have access to fridges and freezers that are possibly not taking any medication and not had a blood transfusion in the last 12 months.

Stasha Jordan, Executive director - South African Breastmilk Reserve

If you are a healthy mom and you're breastfeeding or expressing really every drop counts.
