Eco-friendly bins offer green alternative to disposing of dog poo

A trial project to find a greener way of disposing of dog poo in Scarborough, Cape Town has proved so successful it's now being rolled out in neighbouring Noordhoek.

Local resident, Kelsen De Cruz has designed special composting bins in which to get rid of dog waste, rather than using plastic bags - which end up in landfill - or leaving it...(yuk!)... where others may step in it.

The bins were first trialled in Scarborough where they processed close to a tonne of dog faeces, now two bins are being put at the beach in Noordhoek.

Karoline Hanks from Noordhoek Environmental Action Group told Pippa Hudson more about the project.

My motivation is removing plastic from the system and not fearing the dog poo but actually seeing it as a resource down the line.

Karoline Hanks, Noordhoek Environmental Action Group

Once collected and composted the waste will go towards another community project - On The Verge - which will use the composted poo to fertilise verges.
