Fashion designer David Tlale, in paying homage to his hometown Vosloorus in the East of Johannesburg, hosted the Tlale Vosloo To New York show on Saturday at Vosloorus Civic Centre.

The show narrated the designer's journey on how he came from the dusty streets of Vosloorus to the glamorous New York City runways.

Speaking to Azania Mosaka, Tlale says fabric makes or breaks a design house.

You can never treat fashion like a side chick. It is a full-time job.

Tlale says when people buy local, it encourages the designers and it is good for the economy.

My take is there is nothing better ka Michael Kors or even Marc Jacobs. We are much more capable; we are much more powerful. We are from Africa; we've got diversity, we've got colour, we are loud and bold.

It is our responsibility as South Africans to ask ourselves before we leave our homes what am I wearing that is made in Africa South Africa. If you are wearing all the international brands, what are you saying directly to the industry? You are saying we don't believe in you, you are not talented, and we are going to take the economy out of the country and out of the continent and support international brands.
