Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime's Simone Haysom says gangs operate far broader than the Western Cape.

The Cape Flats is currently enduring an intense period of gang violence, in which over 900 people have been murdered in the first half of the year and residents do not feel safe.

As government greenlights the deployment of the SANDF into the gang-infested communities of the Cape Flats in the Western Cape, Refilwe Moloto speaks to Simone Haysom, a senior analyst at Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime to find out if this move will work.

Haysom is the author of The Last Words of Rowan du Preez: Murder and Conspiracy on the Cape Flats.

She says the results of her research as well as her colleague Mark Shaw who is currently writing a book about the illegal sale of state weapons to the South African underworld, show that the phenomenon is a national issue, far broader than the Western Cape.

There is a massive growth of the organised criminal economy over the last ten years, and by that, we mean bigger gangs, with more guns and more power...as well as an explosion of other criminal revenue sources that do not always get talked about, like extortion which is a major problem in South Africa.

Simone Haysom, Senior analyst - Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime

She says the protection racket has been massively facilitated by the corruption and the corrosion of the law enforcement agencies.

Now we find connections between gangs in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
