UCT honorary research associate David Fig the site could be used for much more innovatory scientific activity.

University of Cape Town (UCT) honorary research associate Dr David Fig has written an article about what should happen to the Pelindaba precinct near Pretoria now that government’s nuclear ambitions have been halted.

The precinct has been home to the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (Necsa) since the 1960s and hosts the country’s earliest nuclear reactor, originally designed to make weapons-grade uranium.

Much of the Necsa’s work has now focused on producing isotopes used in cancer and thyroid treatment at the plant.

The question is whether it is or it's not something of a white elephant.

Dr David Fig, Honorary research associate - UCT

The complex houses a lot of nuclear waste and so the site really needs to be cleaned up before it can be repurposed.

Dr David Fig, Honorary research associate - UCT

The site could be used for much more innovatory scientific activity, much more research linked to future technologies rather than older worn out technologies like nuclear.
