'Side hustling is a great talent acquisition and retention tool for companies'

A study by Henly Business School says people who freelance outside of their formal jobs work an extra 17 or 18 hours outside the average working week, which is 40 to 52 hours.

The study shows that 30% of the people interviewed do not pursue a side job for money alone but also for interest.

Henley Africa dean Jon Foster-Pedley says it turns out that the extra hours do not burn them out.

They are finding that it doesn't create significant increased stress. In fact, they get a lot of satisfaction out of doing the other jobs.

He says side hustling can be beneficial and should be encouraged by companies.

They are working harder, they are more engaged, they are learning things from the other jobs they are doing and bringing that back to their employers, so this a good way to encourage people to work hard for you.

Jon Foster-Pedley, Dean - Henley Africa

If you are a company that encourages side hustling what it means is that you are going to attract really good talent. Encouraging side hustling rather than stigmatising it is a great talent acquisition and retention tool.

He says it improves your capacity to learn.

It's the great learners that do very well in life.
