A violent protest in Langa on Tuesday morning left commuters stranded with some residents unable to go to work or school.
Protesting residents vowed to shut the area down until housing and service delivery issues are dealt with by government.
A number of roads have been affected including Jakes Gerwel Drive.
Posts on social media on Monday called on residents to prevent people from leaving the area, sparking fear among the community.
According to posts on Twitter, a post office was set alight.
Police have also released a statement saying people going into Langa do so at their own risk.
