The City of Cape Town says an estimated 6,175 make up the population of street sleepers in the Mother City.

The latest data on the numbers of street people in Cape Town has revealed a 16% decrease to just over 6,000.

The study, carried out over 18 days in November 2018, also shows that of the 6,175 people sleeping rough, most are men.

Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, explains how they came to these numbers.

We engaged with the various shelters but also engaged with actual people who sleep rough.

Of the 6,000, 2,000 were accessing our shelter facilities which also is an increase from the previous count.
