Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Tertius Simmers says underutilised provincially-owned buildings near the city also flagged.

Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Tertius Simmers talks to Kieno Kammies about the challenges he faces in trying to reduce the housing backlog.

He is also trying to address concerns raised by Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu that the DA-led government backed out of a deal to create housing in the Western Cape.

RELATED: W Cape Human Settlements MEC: 'It's about integrating communities'

He focuses on two elements, firstly, the way the department look at the beneficiary list, and secondly, the solution it plans to implement going forward.

I've spoken of the use of technology and the use of apps to interact with our beneficiaries and broader citizenry.

Tertius Simmers, Human Settlements MEC - Western Cape government

It is crucial to understand which products are available in the human settlements family.

Tertius Simmers, Human Settlements MEC - Western Cape government

He acknowledges that human settlements should not be seen in isolation, but rather viewed together with spatial planning and integrated transport systems.

I started reprioritising certain projects which outwardly ensure that commuters are closer to opportunities...and spaces in the areas to create opportunities for entrepreneurship.

And providing affordable housing closer to the city centre?

There are vast pockets of land...that have been highlighted and belong to national government and we have engaged Minister de Lille on via my sister partner and fellow minister, Mr Madikizela.

Tertius Simmers, Human Settlements MEC - Western Cape government

Western Cape Transport and Public Works Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela, has recently signed over tracts of land which belongs to province to Simmers' department located near the city.

We have also identified underutilised buildings that belong to the provincial government located close to the CBD...we need to work out how to revamp them to be suitable for human settlements usage.
